As well as overseeing research for communication planning and evaluation, we have undertaken specific research projects to help clients better understand their stakeholders and to understand the barriers and drivers of implementing best farming practices. Here are some examples…

Best practices in grain growing (GRDC Northern Panel): We were commissioned to undertake a series of in depth telephone interviews with leading growers and agronomists to understand their use of best practices. Our analysis was based on the MAKAT (Motivations, Attitudes, Knowledge, Ability and Tools) framework. The findings informed the development of their extension program.

Land Water and Carbon Extension (Dairy Australia): We worked with Nicon Rural Services to review the effectiveness of regional support for Dairy Australia’s Land, Water and Carbon Program. The needs analysis process involved a series of face to face and in-depth interviews and a group workshop with key stakeholders. Our report included recommended changes to the delivery model to enhance effectiveness.

Adaption to robotic milking: We worked with Nicon Rural Services to a conduct series of interviews with farmers with automatic milking systems (AMS) and equipment suppliers to understand why most AMS farmers experience a 12-month adaption period but a few struggle for an extended period and some adapt very swiftly. While most farmers reported being challenged in making the transition, their temperament, ability to handle complexity and attitude to risk influenced their transition experience. We developed an AMS extension and training strategy to improve the transition experience for future farmers adopting AMS. The strategy focused on early intervention and supporting farmers to make a decision about whether or not AMS suited their situation.
